Adam Terpening Interview

by Nick Statom

When I first met you I thought you were like 18. Not only because of your size but your surfing as well. How did you come to develop such a good style so early?

photo

Style is probably the most important aspect to me when it comes to bodyboarding. Whenever I am out in the water, I will do my best to perfect my style every time. Certain maneuvers I know don’t look as good going certain ways, so I try to focus on those and at the same time perfect the maneuvers that I have down. Also watching Mitch Rawlins and Jono Bruce over and over again helps.

How did it come about that you got introduced to the older kids like James, Louie and Brett?

photo

I really got to know these guys with the opening and rising of ESTEEM. I never had met James or Louie in person until esteem but I had seen a few shots of them on 805bbr. I always knew Brett, from seeing him out in the water and in videos, but now that I have got know all three of these characters they have been a very influential and comical part in my life.

I know you've spent hours upon hours in the car with these kids searching for waves up north. Describe what kind of things can occur during road trips.

photo

Goodness where do I start? Well there’s always the challenge of beating our last time up there, but only driving the speed limit of course. For starters, we all hate red lights and Pack of cars (Rat Packs). What has been created are very useful ways of avoiding them; I have dubbed them the D.R.T (Double Right Turn) and the B.L.A. (Bike Lane Approach). The D.R.T is where you get in the right lane in the direction you are heading and at a red-lighted intersection make a right turn into the direction adjacent to you and cross over the lanes all the way into the far right lane, then make another right turn and avoid the waiting and the rat pack. The B.L.A. is where you charge through the bike lane and wait next to the car in front of the rat pack (as if you were making a right turn) then wait till the light turns green and accelerate to the front of the pack, leaving everyone behind you in the dust. Also many carcasses of strange animals are found such as boars and vultures.

I heard you guys have found a couple new spots up north these past few months, any possibilities for next winter?

Yeah definitely, they came across a spot called Iron Rods. When I saw this spot for the first I nearly shat myself, it is this dreading right that when hits the reef at 4 foot jacks up to around 6 or so and throws super hard. The way it breaks is real sick and has some serious consequence if you don’t make it. Definitely a spot to get some new shots at. Another spot myself and Ryan Laughlin came across is this very mysto right that seems to wedge off just the rocks below it, it is way sketch to get down but has some serious potential. Both these spots I am yet to surf but intrigue me very much.

Can you explain the reason behind so many younger kids starting up bodyboarding in the past year or so? It seems like Randall has his hands full as the babysitter over at Esteem.

photo

Its crazy, every sense Esteem opened the surfing and bodyboarding population has multiplied. One kid tries bodyboarding or surfing, gets hooked then tells all of his friends and then they get hooked, its just one big chain reaction. Every week or so there’s a new kid out in the water, which is very amping because for the most part they are associated with esteem. But what parents often forget is that esteem is a very legitimate business and is on a huge rise, and they have a tendency of making phone calls to esteem asking where there child and interferes with business for Randall and Robby.

What other groms besides yourself have been pushing it lately up in Pismo?

There is a nice pack of them forming, these kids are the future of the central coast. Kids like Roy O’Neil, Blaise Brogan, Justin Hearst, and Collin are all pushing it very hard and are super amped on bodyboarding.

Do you have any plans for the upcoming year as far as contests and traveling?

photo

That new Pacoast tour is looking pretty solid and I might enter that depending on how the waves are down there. As for traveling I think I might head down Chile with dad this June and maybe a trip to Indo in August with a friend of mine who has a house over there, if all goes to plan. And of course some down south missions this summer with the southern hemi swells and the DMV finally letting me drive legally as I turn 16 in June.

What areas of your riding are you looking to improve?

photo

I want to really get my inverts tweaked and have a better approach going right. Also I want improve my projection going out while hitting reverses off close outs and throw more tail while doing carving reverses, as well as perfect all the aspects of my bodyboarding.

Springtime is upon us and this is usually the worst time of year for surfing up in Pismo. What are you going to be up to when its flat and blown everyday for the next 3 months?

Ill have to break out the skateboard and have a few skate sessions every now and then. I’ll Probably do some training for my trips in the summer and hope for earlier season souths.

Any last words?

Thanks to Nick Statom, The Rookies, Randall Hamilton and everyone whose is pumped on bodyboarding.
