Here we are in route to our favorite big-wave destination equipped with Louie's canoe in Mark Miller's old Blazer. An entire book could be devoted to Mark's history of cars. When Brett left for Indo a few years back he lent Wilbur his car. Bad idea. After crashing it, Roldan still hasn't forgiven him and occasionally takes out his frustration with permanent markers.
This shot is just plain sick. One can anticipate what is about to come. Roldan about to get locked in on a south county nugget.
Every year we hike out to this beach for James Murdock's birthday. With no signs of civilization for miles and a heavy shorebreak out front, this is an ideal escape for the Pismo rat pack.
Here's Eric Eliason down in Ventura bashing a nice section after speeding through a barrel. Few bodyboarders over six feet make it to the pro level but Eliason is an exception. Now having dropped off the face of the bodyboarding world, a number of Ventura based videos and a few inspiring South Jetty performances made Eliason a legend in the late nineties.
These were probably the biggest waves I've seen to this day. This spot breaks a half mile out to sea and is primarily just a drop but not on this day. I just had knee surgery the week before this swell so I couldn't shoot from the water and was super bummed. Here's James dropping into a sizey bomb.
Here's a sight I've seen oh so many times. James reversing off a section at Pismo with videographer Kenny Chacon behind the lens. Kenny, although a skater to the core, is a big supporter of bodyboarding and films whenever possible. Now living in San Diego with Mark Miller he's getting back into the thick of things once again.
If you're from Pismo you know that with winter time storms comes the infamous Northside Rights. The current can get ugly and the water quality even uglier, but its worth it when the machine-like lines march through. Here's Louie Robles with a hefty backside gouge.
I love filming Louie because he'll charge anything and everything if you yell at him enough. What this results in is a fair amount of heavy DK wipeouts like this. This particular day was the first time I ever used a water housing and it was Josh Warthen's ex-Adolescence housing that I modified for my old Digital8 camera. I ended up getting some decent shots, but this one of Louie going over the falls plain out made my day.
Roldan called this board the sled which he created with longtime Toobs shaper Marcos Munoz a couple years ago. This thing was like 46 inches long and had a nose angled like a skateboard. Occasionally he'd take it out for kicks and still proceed to destroy it-that bastard.
I've come to the conclusion that dropkneers are just plain weird. Roldan spits at the camera while doing a little pre-session wrestling underneath the Pismo pier with another DKer Louie Robles. Brett is an eagle scout and knows how to defend himself but Louie used to train as a boxer and is from Grover City so it was an even match.
