Every so often we'll be interviewing people from our favorite sites. First up: Ryan Turner from Plastic People.
805: What are your favorite things about living in NYC?
RT: The possibilities, the people, the way people think,
the streets and buildings. The bullshit.
805: What do you miss most from Cali?
RT: My family, but not a whole lot after that.
805: Where do you get inspiration for the work you do at
Plastic People?
RT: Fashion magazines, the gossip columns, television and
all the silliness that they are fueled by. I recently went to this V Magazine
Party in Time Sq. at this place called Madame Tussaud's, a wax museum. On
top of plenty of booze and wax recreations of celebrity personalities (Barbara
Walters, Ricky Martin etc), which was weird enough, the party managed to attract
plenty of celebrities and old money, old blue blood upper east side types.
The old and rich. Most of these people should have died years ago, but thanks
to modern medicine and ceaseless wealth they are still with us, still frequenting
the odd social or two. The difference between an archaic New York socialite
and a wax figure after a couple drinks is not much. I later passed Amanda
Lepore in the crowd, whom I had never seen in person-do you know her?
She could be described as our muse. All in all it was awful, but it was plastic.
I shouldn't have been there but I was and I am thankful for that. I was by
myself.
805: 3 albums you couldn't live without?
RT: Just started listening to this new scottish band Franz
Ferdinand-excellent stuff check it out, a lot of Siouxsie, lots of Joy Division.
805: Favorite memory from your days of bodyboarding on the
central coast?
RT: Rare days at South Jetty.
805: Where do you see Plastic People in five years?
RT: New York
