Re: Mike Stewart shrine

I wrote this on another thread about my site-
"I can see where you are coming from, I guess there could be some up-tight photogs that would cry about low resolution versions of old, already published shots. Though I do think most mags and bbing photogs would appreciate the promotion of the sport. I'm not making money off it in anyway, this is solely a personal site. I'm doing it because when you type bbing on google you either see amatuer shit or the same old stuff on fluidzone (for the most part.) I also think it's a good look back at where we came from as well. Plus there's a number of sites on the net that have scans already. I suppose I'll have to deal with the naysayers as (if) they come. If someone/company does approach me about taking their stuff down I would definately comply. This could be a really good thing and I think it's worth a shot."

Re: Mike Stewart shrine

Yup, Yoshua, that's the photo I had in mind. Thanks for finding it and posting it, it's one of my all time favorites. My landlady made me get rid of a bunch of old magazines because she thought they were a fire danger, so all I have left is memories....

i have a friend ( matt florence) that used to compete in all the old school ( circa 1979-82) contests, he has super 8 footage of stewy doing the first rolls anybody had seen in contest at.......westward beach of all places.  i keep asking him to make me a copy of it ( in fact he as sick footage of wedge circa 83 with black bottom mach7-7's) he just such a drunk now. :- (

Mike could you verify that as well, thanks...

Re: Mike Stewart shrine

robbo, i thought it was pat caldwell who may have had the first photographs of a roll. in a mag called action now.

being a good bodyboarder doesn't make you a good person.

Re: Mike Stewart shrine

.....from what i understand pat/ mike are both credited it with the roll..the same way eppo and jacob reeve both invented the ars......my frined matt just has footage... no photos...he told me everybody at the comp was tripping out when they saw mike do those....

Larry Moore "Flame" took this photo at Natividad island off mexico. He said he was panning down the beach through his view finder and saw something flash and pulled the trigger. I think this was the first reverse air published.

I was on here and saw your post. This seems like a unique problem as the durability on my boards has been really good. However if you have a legit claim please e-mail me at my website and we will get you a new board right away.

Mike, this is exactly why you are the man.  By the way, I saw you at Papaikou awhile ago.  My friend (the fat guy) almost died that day.  It was hilarious.  Are you gonna be on the big island at all this summer or straight traveling?  It's been the worst spring for waves on the eastside I can remember.

Re: Mike Stewart shrine

Stewy, I'm gonna have to post my autographed mag that you signed for me when I went into the Gyroll factory about 8 years ago.  It was the mag that documented that big south you followed from tahiti to alaska.  I was sooo amped that day, my mom got me out of 7th grade early to take me up to the factory to get a new leash and Harry Antipala was at the front desk which almost gave me a panic attack because he was one of my favorites, then you walked in and I think my mom had to hold me up and help me talk.  Then I met your mom which topped it off!  haha.  Then you signed that mag for me and it basically made my year.  You're the man.

Re: Mike Stewart shrine

^ hahaha.  Mike's mom ran that place out off the 91 fwy.  So much aloha in that little shop that it couldn't hold it all.

Re: Mike Stewart shrine

Yeah, I remember the was a short Mike Stewert segment in some surf movie I watched a long time ago, just to see it. He did the most casual barrel roll, just kinda effortlessly sitting upside down in the roof of this big barrel as it curled over, it was very impressive.

Ha ha.  I hereby place a bounty (a case of beer/bottle of wine perhaps?) on a Stewy dk picture.  I hear they have one in the basement if The Alamo.  Next to PeeWee's bike.

One exists. Im surprised Yosh hasnt posted it. It seems like he has scans of every pic ever ran in Bodyboarding!!

But my friend had the pic of Mike DKing a left frontside from back in the day on his wall. Someone just needs to find it.

I know I destroyed about 2 years worth of Bodyboarding mags and had a Stewart shrine going on my wall from Jr High through most of high school. The rest of the walls were just sick shots of Lindholm, Severson, Sasaki, and Buder.
