Topic: No Friends / Roach Documentary - Stoker doing videos again....

I don't know where to start this other than i really need input/opinions from all of you. I have recently been getting back into doing video production professionally and there has been talk of possibly doing a No Friends and/or Roach documentary. Some have told me to stay away, some have told me its the best thing ever.
With that said, I really have no idea where to start other than to see if there is even an interest in this. It would cost a crapload of money to produce properly with travel, some production gear, music rights, etc. I have been talking to a lot of people regarding getting a Kickstarter account going to see if it can get funded. How much, i don't know just yet. Maybe throw out some opinions.
I have the majority of cameras, computers, gear, drones, etc. But the rest is going to cost a lot to get tons of interviews, travel, music rights, water housings, etc. Plus trying to make anything for profit. I know, not much. But i am willing to try.
Along with the production of the NF and/or Roach documentary i would be completely remastering every single video from old Stoker Production days (Spit, Dyslexic, Forgiven and possibly 50/50) as well as every single No Friends video or side project for a digital download. 1994-2007? 15 or so videos.
With a kickstarter account there would be various tiers of options to buy just the documentary, remastered videos, sponsorships, t shirts, stickers, autographed stuff, etc. You name it I will try and offer it.

And here is the kicker, if it all goes well and the whole project can get funded and do well I am thinking of starting up No Friends again and see where it goes.
All of this will be done solely by me, Stoker since No Friends is basically no more. Long story and that is why i felt the need for a documentary. A cool story to tell going into the 20th anniversary of No Friends (1997) in the next couple of years.

So if you need to forward this discussion to anyone and everyone you know, please do so. I would really like a professional opinion as to what you guys think since you guys are the ones that made No Friends what it was.

Basically what i would like to accomplish is get 2000 or so people to spend at least $25 each. I think that would be able to be in budget and then be able to start the work.
I know that 2015 is not anywhere near what NF was in 2000 but I think it is worthy of an attempt to try and get 2000 people to spend $25 each. I know that NF back in day was a total different story, but.... i think its possible.
Gotta dream, right. Gotta do something positive. Maybe i am wrong. And if it doesn't get funded, then it does not get made and no story told. Maybe i am dreaming. But i think it is worth a shot.

Kickstarter could be the way to go.

I'd definitely be keen to throw down some cash for a documentary, the remastered videos and clothes. I've got NF clothes from ten years ago that are still in great condition with very little loss of colour and they still fit real nice.

Try hooking up with Todd Barnes, James Kates and/or the crew at Le Boogie Magazine. They use Le Boogie Records bands that feature in some of their soundtracks.

Fingers crossed some companies kick in for sponsorship.

Could you start with the remastering 1st? I would buy a NF box set instantly! If you needed a Kickstarter for that I am sure that would get funds very quickly.

With that being said if you got the ball rolling selling the older-remastered films you could judge the response and know how realistic it would be to make a new NF movie / Roach Documentary. I am in no way a professional so I might have the process backwards, but would it be more expensive to start an entire new project vs remaster an older film?

Stoker if you were to assemble the krew (Skipp, Ross, Hubb, Roach etc) it would be the greatest thing ever. Shit I bet Todd would help film it for next to nothing and hes insane now.

I think it sounds good, I'd definitely buy some remastered videos. Its funny how after 18 years, I hear songs from the old videos on the radio and can still remember the edits and riders sections. IMO, I think remastering should be done 1st and see what kind of market you got, then go from there...I personally wouldn't be into the merchandise and all that but the videos sound rad.

Just reading your thoughts on making a come back got me that excited! i vividly remember watching NF1 for the first time back in 97 or something? i was a 15yo hyper grommie who couldn't get off the school bus quick enough to get to my mates place to watch it. Best day ever. Bring it back! you created and shaped us a generation to look up to when we were groms. love to see and hear what roach etc are up to now.

^I think he's on to something. As someone who grew up watching your videos, i'd like to think that the box set kickstarter + Sales could help fund the documentary... at least decrease the target for Kickstarter campaign #2. Seems like you could turn a quicker profit on the box set over combining it with the documentary effort, too. I'm really not sure of the costs associated with video production either, though.

as for starting NF again, i'd definitely buy some clothes. Eventual sponsorship of some guys that like to ride different crafts might lead to a larger potential market, too, without straying too far from the BB'ing roots.

I own every NF movie some vhs some DVDs and 50/50,Boardom (yeah don't forget that gold) and Forgiven too on VHS . I always wanted Dyslexic and SPit too
TO THIS DAY I'm still on the lookout for the NF dvd re releases which regret not buying
I'd buy a box set for sure
As for a Roach doco I WOULD CRAVE THIS MORE THAN FIRE

A roach/No friends documentary would be the way to go IMO.

Roach is at a Mike Stewart type level and would compel people to get on board and support the project. It would also sell extremely well.

Re-releasing all of the old videos would do more for the older guys looking to relieve some memories not invigorate the youth to by the old vids and support No Friends.

Agree with Dilliono, best way to gauge interest and funding may be to re-master previous movies first then onto new productions.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think for Kickstarter you can set a funding goal - if you don't meet it everyone gets their money back and you don't have to go through with it. So if you need $10K to remaster all movies and the Roach doc (I really have no idea on cost just for example) set that as the funding goal, and if you meet it great! If not, no worries everyone gets their contributions back and you don't have to dig into your own pocket for it. I think you can even set funding 'levels'; so for X amount contributed you get your choice of three remastered videos, for Y amount you get all remastered vids, for Z amount you get all remastered vids + Roach doc, etc.

Really hope you get the backers to do this Stoker, I'm for sure interested and will be following what happens.

Edit: after posting saw Rusty's comment about Roach/NF documentary, I'll second that, great idea

Stoker, I would suggest getting in touch with Tom Boyle. As you know, the audience here on 805 is VERY limited in terms of the fact that it mainly consists of "older" riders who grew up on NF videos/clothing/culture (mainly since Alex hasn't allowed new members on 805 for a few years now), and therefore this audience will naturally be overwhelmingly supportive of this type of endeavor which will spark visceral memories of their glory days coming up in the sport.

I do think there's support here, but you may find more support overseas, particularly in Oz as you are already discovering as younger riders there seem to have a better appreciation for the history of the sport.

Boyle re-released some of his old vids on DVD about 10 years back and it never really took off. He had planned to re-release all of them, but after the first re-release semi-flopped, he scrapped the project.

Not comparing your vids to Tom's, but there's a common thread here.

Sorry to be devil's advocate here, but Stoker, I would say give it a run if you think it's viable! I don't know everything!

Digital rereleases of the old NF movies would be awesome, but remastering everything seems super time consuming and I doubt the amount of money you'd make would be worth the time investment. I think if you just put up the same quality files that were on the DVD releases most people would be stoked.

I'm super interested in a Roach documentary and/or NF documentary. I would drop solid coin on both.

i think there's a doc coming out about the shark island boys
that would be a good litmus test - see how it does, see how it feels you know?

if you do a feature doc, i would package it as a group of dudes, a place and a time - not just roach
think bra boys or dogtown and z boys
a cultural phenomenon etc

bring in current stand-up surf stars who know how legit bodyboarding is, respect the boogies at pipe etc, to give it legitimacy
i've worked on a shit ton of docs - give me a shout if you need help with narrative/story. be psyched to help out

limey makes a good point about making it more like a dogtown and z boys. id like to see the history of all the NF guys. they all seemed so fucking cool to me back then (and still do now).

pertaining to what Jay said about Tom Boyle's re-release; i think the two series aren't really comparable other than the fact they feature bodyboarding. NF was so different than everything that had come prior... that coupled with being released in the late 90's/early 2000's makes me think there'd be more people still hyped on No Friends than the Boyle's films. i wouldn't let his lack-luster re-release discourage you, Stoker.

*im pretty sure everyone wants No Friends back. the videos were so good they just cant help but resonate in everyone who saw them. much more of a draw to NF than to ANY other bodyboarding film prior (including Carters films - blaspheme i know)

I am stoked to hear about this! No Friends played such a huge part for bodyboarding in general, and for me and my kids personally. We need a re-release party or new Docu party in Rosarito with everyone. I'd even be up for some Pre-release fundraising events...

Hard to believe this was 9 years ago, almost exactly. And now my twins are turning 21 in 2 months...

Yup, i have NF clothes from 10+ years holding up too.
Those guys at Le Boogie are awesome, but i want to do my own thing just like how we did with NF originally.

remaster 50/50 first :)

Remastering will be done along the way. Some are easy because i have every single Final Cut Pro project backed up and all the files, etc. The older 1994-1998 ones will be the hardest.
Part of production would be to try and get the original crew together for a trip to Indo or something.
50/50 was done with Sean Manning. I do have a random Beta Sp master but i think it was PAL. That was all i had.

I am not 100% on exactly how Kickstarter works. But, i have given bands money for an album one year before its release and i think that the only way it gets taken out of my account is if it gets funded. Not funded, no money taken out.
Remastering is actually a minimal cost, just time really. Some are easy remasters, some are more time consuming. Ironically the older ones are harder to do and make less money.

I was the one who put Tom Boyle's older movies to DVD when i was at VAS. No offense to Tom, and i hope i don't sound like i am bragging, but No Friends was on a whole other level. NF1 sold 10,000 copies in its first year i believe. With all the free social media advertising and digital downloads, etc these days it is totally different. There is no PAL vs NTSC or DVD player issues, etc. Digital downloads are digital downloads. 2005 vs 2015 technology.
I posted on 805 for that very reason. Older generation that supported NF from the beginning. Riptide posted it on their website and through FB and it had so many likes and comments within 24 hours. True, way more support overseas, but i just wanted to see at first. I didn't expect it to get going this fast. I have been replying to people all morning.

A little different perspective for you Stoker -
I have a great appreciation for the history of the sport and was right there in my 20's, bodyboarding nearly everyday in the mid-90s when NF was coming up and pumping out insane stoke and so it definitely has a spot in heart. But to be completely honest, at 40, with full-time good job, a couple of kids, and the beach steps from my house, spending time watching surf videos is the last thing on my mind when I get a spare minute. Sure, I like a good 2-4min clip on surfline or the video eye candy thread of this site, but that's all the surf porn I need. I tried watching some of the Inside and Enough Said recently, and I was over it in 10 min (I freakin' loved those movies as a single guy surfing all the time).

I would, however, turn out for a premier party of a new documentary on the history of NF and/or Paul Roach and pay you $10-15, drink some brew with my fellow boogies and possibly buy a cap or a t-shirt. But the old stuff, its just clutter for me now, even as a digital download. The memories are there and living well inside me. I held on to Bodyboarding mags for 15-20 years and after not looking at them for about 10 of those years, handed them off.

I'd also note that the last time I got all pumped up for a boogie video was for Fire. I bought it on DVD, watched it 1.5 times and that's it. Considered tossing it recently during a house cleaning, but kept it and now it just sits burried deeper.

I've got the No Friends movies on dvd and there's the No Friends Vimeo account with a lot of the sections from NF1 & 2 so I'm good with that. All I want is a NF documentary, a Roach documentary and some clothes. Some of the best parts of movies like The Lackey Project and The Experiment trips from Riptide (the Indo trip with Hardy, Hubb, Rawlins and Botha, and then the World Trip with Lackey, Kingy, Player and Hardy) were the rider interviews and behind the scenes stuff.

If you could link up with the Aussies, Euros and South Americans via social media (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) I'm pretty confident that you'd get enough support for your Kickstarter. Those are the main hubs for bodyboarding these days.

Stoker, if $25 from 2,000 people is your goal, I think that's possible. Best of luck, and of course we'll help promote it. We sold A LOT of NF vids/gear back in the day! We still have one or two items in the warehouse I think.
