not saying this is some proved "theory" but looks to be a slight correlation

Re: Next time you think of buying a red board...

I ride a board with a red bottom!!

By the way that second pic was from an attack recently here in Monterey, the guy survived too.

whoops, wrong pic.  I read somewhere that the standup attacked in oxnard/ventura area had a red board, can't find a pic tho

Re: Next time you think of buying a red board...

when was there a GW attack in Ventura?

Re: Next time you think of buying a red board...

google says never a fatal one and only sparing sightings of the animals in the county.

Re: Next time you think of buying a red board...

I thought, but could be horrifically wrong. Most sharks dont see color very well or not at all?

I was thinking of the one in monterey of the pic^, guess he did not die though.  Can't deny a slight correlation..

"Avoid wearing bright contrasting colors, advises Ralph Collier, president of the Shark Research Committee, which tracks shark activity. "They might come up and nibble on you because they can't figure out what you are," he said. "Curiosity has a great deal to do with the shark coming out and looking people over.""

Re: Next time you think of buying a red board...

I'd bet my jellyballs that it has more to do with contrast than color.

doesnt color somewhat = contrast though?

Re: Next time you think of buying a red board...

I'd like to see them do that test in different Orders ie. red, black and yellow and different combinations thereof. Super cool video.

Good find 858!

I had read all kinds of opinions about colors and sharks and always be careful when buying a new board.

The yumyum yellow is a classic for divers, and sure enough it appears to be true...

Re: Next time you think of buying a red board...

They're probably attracted to bright or loud colors. It's not like the sharks thinking "oooo a red board, yumm". GWs can be curious creatures, the more obvious a color or object is in the water, I'd assume the more likely a great white would wanna bump it and see whats up. Like these surfboards/kayaks, or like videos of whites following fishing boats. The problem is, sharks don't have arms or even clear vision to where they could discern whether youre food or not from a mutually safe distance. Which is why divers or surfers usually loose or a limb or bleed out from a bite rather than are completely consumed by the shark.

Re: Next time you think of buying a red board...

Red boards are my favorite color too. I guess I'm switching colors.

Re: Next time you think of buying a red board...

Nearly all my boards are red.. in fact my latest board is red with a silver slick (see below). But its not just red boards.
A study in South Africa towed boards behind a boat and yellow boards got more strikes than white boards.
So yellow you are a shark biscuit,
wear black wetsuits and they mistake you for seal.
Have a silver slick and they will mistake you for a shoal of fish.

Lol, I got a good chuckle out of that.

Anywho, did a little googling on colors & sharks & found this little number:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/ … tsuit.html

Perhaps the red board offers some of the most contrast against the ocean color & is most easily spotted to a shark.

I guess the French government already recalled that claimy of paying people to kill sharks.  Use Bret T as bait since sharks like red :)

Re: Next time you think of buying a red board...

Any color correlation to the 2 OC shark bites?

It seems strange that the two people bit were females. I'd figure there would be far more dudes than chicks in the water. Two could be coincidence, but a third should warrant further investigation.
