Re: Snow session report

Skinned up Cuyumaca Mt.  Sat morning to pop the cherry on my new splitboard.  Damn it was way easier going up in ski mode then snowshoeing up.  Ride down wasn't that much fun.  Was like 8" fresh powder ontop of a 2-4" base.  So i basically stayed on the fire road as to avoid fucking up my new board.  Time to get out into some real mountains.

Re: Snow session report

Yeah man it makes the way up way more enjoyable.  You use less energy and can actually just kinda ski or in my case out of control slide down little rollers in ski mode.  I smoked my poor buddy that was shoeing up behind me.  Board switches over to ride mode pretty quickly once you've done it a couple times and rides pretty good for being cut down the middle.  All in all very impressed and stoked on this new toy.

Bummer man!  I thought I broke a rib there last week, was flat basing it down a run hit something and all I can remember is hearing a thud and a crack. Scary stuff. Got the wind knocked out of me for a bit, but luckily I was fine after a while.

Good luck with the recovery!

Re: Snow session report

about fucking time, Hood:

"Friday: Snow showers. The snow could be heavy at times. Temperature falling to around 26 by 3pm. Windy, with a west wind between 30 and 32 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 13 to 19 inches possible.

Friday Night: Snow showers, mainly before 4am. Low around 22. Breezy, with a west wind between 22 and 29 mph, with gusts as high as 46 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches possible."

Re: Snow session report

Get on the groomers early and then stay in the park.  Snowmaking crews are doing a really good job.  Canyon, Eagle, and Main are all open.  The middle of the month is looking pretty promising.

Also, there are some floaters that start to churn up as the day goes on so you may or may not want to break out any new gear.

Carl, So good to see you!

Re: Snow session report

Thanks man. Rode from 1-3 yesterday on a new board haha busting out a board with a blasted edge today haha fuck some snow would be nice right now

Re: Snow session report

Bear has very little snow. But is still close to 90% fully open Id say. The snow wasn't the best but still had a good time none the less

Man I was up there for 4 days over the new year weekend.  Snow was pretty bad imo, and for them to be charging full price is just ridiculous.  I only boarded one day and decided to go climb Mt. morrsion near convict lake instead another day and then just get drunk the rest of the time.  Still a fun trip, but that town is just getting too rich for me i guess.  Fucking $9 dollar beers at canyon lodge?  I can get my growler filled for like $8 at mammoth brew.  Ok done ranting.

Second this, boarded one day on the 29th, and spent the rest of the time hiking. Full price for that place is not worth it, wait till at least one foot is dumped before wasting money

That rug really held the room together.

Re: Snow session report

heading back up to bear tonight and boarding tomorrow and maybe friday. ill let you know how shitty the snow is.

Any of you guys still up here? (Mammoth)

Carl, So good to see you!

Re: Snow session report

Fuck, gonna throw on the Florida shirt and start Tebowing for the West. California doesn't need any help getting fires going and other places with dead trees everywhere (beetles) and no snow are going to have a shit melt and probably get lit up like a signal flare come summer.

yup nothing on the charts till after the 13th.  If I didn't have a pass and family up here there would be no way I would even touch this place right now.

Well all in all I had fun but the snow was
Really bad. Icy just about everywhere with little random spots of powder followed by slush right after. It was really hot too which sucked being in snow gear and what not. But they still had about 90% of the mountain open

The Squaw shot was screencapped Jan 4th from their own webcam according to http://sfist.com/2012/01/04/no_seriousl … n_taho.php

The Vail shot I grabbed from the Teton Gravity forum's monster Colorado weather thread; supposedly it's pretty recent.

Re: Snow session report

That's depressing...Squaw website says they have about 200+ acres open between them and alpine..that's terrible!  Mammoth has just over 400... losing money!

Interesting read on Mammoth.
Pretty cool that they aren't just letting all the mtn workers suffer.
Even though I'm sure everyone is feeling it.
