Re: surfmat candy

Btw I ordered an mt5 from Mark Saturday and shot him a brief e-mail to see if he'd respond. This is what I got back today:

Thanks for the order.

Sorry for the delay getting to you we just had the best south swell of the year.

Re: surfmat candy

what an awsome shot, reminds me of rincon.
i had to put a bit of vulkeem on my deck of the mt5 but i ride with a suit always.
sounds like the mat bug has bitten you hard you got a mini quiver all of a sudden.

Re: surfmat candy

For sure that coastline is gorgeous. No wonder Greenough moved there. Yeah might have jumped the gun on getting a 2nd mat but I read on that UK forum that the "introductory price" is supposed to go up in a month or so. Hopin to give it a go in solid north shore this winter. I figured the deck wasn't as rough as the TRT canvas. Maybe I'll be able to bareback it. 2 bbs, 4 sticks & 2 mats...got my bases covered now brah. ha ha.

^sick find. Paddled my 6'1" out to glassy 3-5ft diamond head this morning...with like 200 other honoluluians...got a few fun ones but the whole time I was thinking how much better it would have been on a mat.

Re: surfmat candy

it was in response to a japanese blue magazine article
where he was photographed giving the impression
that he is the man behind mats. I wrote them
and asked for my name then outted me to him

"As far as cheap Chinese labor …..it was easier to deal with a Communist Chinese government than a Corporate Fascist American one."

I could go on, but essentially he will try to rationalize every dubious business decision
to fit his narrow view of the world.
I had no choice you see?

so what you're trying to say, that Blue Magazine likes to use Yahoo as their preferred email client?

Re: surfmat candy

http://www.allaboutsurf.com/articles/matafesto?pg=5

well that article by Ken McKnight paints a different picture...

"Mark Thomson is probably best known in the surf world as a bit of a radical who is always ready to explain his latest theories to any one who'll listen and is the man who has given us some of surfing's most beautifully shot motion pictures. He rides a surf mat like no other...Thomson calls himself a Cameraman, Shaper, Designer and anti-corporate non-conformist. After talking to him about this story, and at age 47, I'd call him a forward thinking visionary."

...I'd hope not, but maybe Mark is a douche - I don't know the guy, however I still don't understand who you are exactly "matrider" & why so much effort to smear him?

Re: surfmat candy

That's my email.  I wrote Blue magazine in order to give credit where credit was due
but for whatever reason they found it best to run it by Mark even though he was the person in question
and now he is trying to legally intimidate myself and dale

Re: surfmat candy

1.) who are you?
2.) how is there this much drama in the mat surfing world?

3.) Why does Mark need too legally intimidate dale?  Seems backwards?    Does this mean Mark wont be getting his 30 denier MT5 from dale ? Heard it was on order....

Can Not wait for my Neumatic to get here!..... hmmm, If I just agree with you , can we get Dale to bump my order?

Re: surfmat candy

joiedevivre, I'm just sharing my experience

like I wrote to mark
if I bought a carbon surfboard from you to my spec
slapped my name on it
claimed your work as my own then mass produced it in asia
would that be cool with you? Or would you send me another nice letter?
So why would it be ok with surf mats?
Keep in mind Dale came up with the modern nylon mat
and how little surfboard knowledge spills over to mats

If you're a swaylocks fan then you should be familiar with Dale's other work
as well as his helpful posts on there
but if not

http://www.allaboutsurf.com/articles/solomonson?pg=9
http://ridersofwaves.blogspot.com/2010/ … -1988.html
http://www.quivermag.com/boards/dale-solomonson-1984-0

I'm posting more on here than on other forums because the mat forums don't take to bickering
and I don't either, but I dislike what is happening to Dale even more.

Re: surfmat candy

Thank you for the more detailed explanation (I take it from the e-mail screen grab that your 1st name is Lenin?). Not only am I totally and completely new to this whole mat-surfing thing but like I've said before, I have never met any of the people involved in this supposed conflict. So really I should just shut the hell up...but as usual I won't.
So from what I understand...Dale is the innovator & pioneer of modern surf mat design & construction. BUT he is still building all mats by hand in his home workshop and has sadly been dealing with health problems that have put him behind in filling orders. Customers are required to pay for his mats up front and then wait a long time.
Mark is offering a less sophisticated but decent factory made mat that gets to you in about a week at almost 1/3 the cost. So it would seem he is filling a different niche in the (admittedly small) mat market.
Therefore the real problem boils down to things that are really hearsay, i.e. Mark "stole" the krypt mt5 design from Dale and they are no longer on good terms as a result.
If true, that does totally suck for Dale. But at the same time if he plans to keep producing mats solo from a home workshop I doubt the competition from Mark will put him out of business so easily.
This reminds me a little of how "surftech" (manufacturer of pop-out epoxy boards) threatened the livelihood of shapers & the future of handmade polyester boards when they first came out some 10 years ago...but things definitely didn't pan out that way. CAD software & shaping machines have changed the game but I could still go to plenty of shapers if I wanted (or could afford) a custom stick. /end rambling

92

Re: surfmat candy

the krypt will not have the quality feel of the neumatic and even if it did
the krypt is designed for Mark, which is very different than the average or advanced rider.
if they approached neumatics do you think Mark would have several on order from Dale?
Or would ask him to continue designing mats for him?
If the krypt were my first mat and all I knew about mats
I wouldn't be riding a mat.

Hey matrider do you own a televsion?

Although I'm a total newbie & have only ridden the tracker roundtail & the mt5 I can easily agree that the mt5 probably can't compare to one of Dale's neumatics. So far I definitely like the TRT best as its suits my low skill level and the type of waves I'm riding best. It seems to do more of the work for me. BUT I do not regret dropping $150 on a krypt because #1 I notice a big difference in the way it rides which is very cool and something to work toward getting the hang of #2 its great to have 2 mats to take other people out with me. Just last night my girl and I took both mats out in waikiki and had a blast sharing 2-3ft waves. We were riding waves together down the line, running into eachother and laughing our asses off. That's the sort of good times I'm looking for out of these things. It would be awesome to eventually charge big barrels on a mat but I'm no where near there yet. At this point I suck way too much to think of dropping $350+S&H on a neumatic & wait who knows how long...so the mt5 is an alternative for people like me. Where's Jamo anyway?

recently had some great sessions on the TRT  in some crossed up hb peaks.
I am always amazed  how a mat feels like its a living  creature when you ride it.
The feeling is actually even better because it is not like your riding a dolphin.
its like the mat is a new living extension of you.

ridin the TRT at 90 degrees last session and it still flys down  the line i think i like the TRT between 90 and 160
ducking has become easier a slight reverse u and reverse rocker as i duck and a change in angle from how i dip a boogie have been the recent major changes

I disagree about the mt5 being a 2nds quality mat
I would say it is the best quality mat ever produced by machines in a factory.
if i had to make a comparison it would be a corvette to a handmade exotic car

I think i might grab another neumatic soon just sent Dale an email asking him whats new his way.
