Re: Reggae

yep-
viceroys
gladiators
itals
wailing souls
-any good rock steady- pre-roots- but remember its the studios that truly count- they were the instruments
like
upsetters
sound dimension
skatalites
aggrovators
brentford allstars
etc etc
these guys are the true backbone that everyone laid their lyrics 2- even Bob!
but early originals- around the 80's reggae took a seriously bad hit from synthesized instruments and bad recording equipment- even sum of the best sound like pure crap thru the 80's like
culture
heptones
gregory isaacs
steel pulse
third world
even UB40
pre synthesized tho these guys were solid (even UB40) no really! i will try and find a link and show u- sumwhere in the mid 90's after Marleys big influence started to take hold groups started getting back to their roots and new sounds started to form in europe with mixing roots and techno (kinda)
NorCal and SoCal started producing sum really good sounds as well- white rasta- mainly from older jamaican musicians moving to canada to take advantage of their health care- thats why cali/oregon/wash has loads of roots reggae playing live- makes em sum money so they can continue to influence with their sounds and they can continue to breathe a bit longer from all that puffin that they got so good at in jamaica

Re: Reggae

just 2 prove how bad the 80's were 2 reggae- here is UB40 b4 they were known- b4 money in their pockets- an english twist to jamaican style jammin'- most of these have crap sound quality but im sure u will get the point- once UB40 made a few hits the system took em over and they became the carp u hear 2day- it happend to so many in the 80's

and example of throwin lyrics on top - this is where roots began

gladiators

winston rodney- better known as the burning spear
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWtXuCEjBKc
this is the only version i can find of early spear- winston is truly amazing- pure roots- he was pre marley and influenced marleys roots sound after marleys years at the ark

Very, I enjoy lo-fi shit that's different sounding, reggae is too fuckin played out to me. The Clash received much of their influence from reggae tho, and i love them. Are you still amping on your Pink Floyd CD's brah?

edit: just want to say as a disclaimer i generally don't judge other people's musical tastes (unless u listen to complete trash), as i know mine is eclectic and full of shit people hate. listen to whatever makes you feel good

You know, Danny, I agree with you to a certain point.  My two least favorite kinds of music are Pop Country and Bad Reggae.  Both of them make me want to shove ice picks in my ears to make the pain stop.  Bad reggae in particular conjures up images of drunk, Bob Marley T-shirt-wearing fratboys chugging Coors Light at an outdoor festival in Pittsburgh while they puff huge joints rolled from Mexican dirt weed and ending all of their sentences with, "Mon!"  Truth told, I've seen way more weak reggae shows than good reggae shows, but that doesn't stop me from looking for more good shit to balance it all out.

Shine on, you crazy diamond...

Re: Reggae

hey erica- u know that my newest fav to collect is lo-fi/trip hop/chill?  u actually have good taste- nuthin better than a solid day of solo surf and a mellow beat in my head- i collected reggae 4 years until it became popular - im kinda over it but it doesnt mean i dont luv it- just like Hendrix- i spent $1000's on rarities and such in my early collecting dayz- ebay wuz like crack 2 me when it first happend- and then jimi got popular- moved 2 reggae- and i hafta agree w tyrez- the reason i stopped collecting reggae wuz the weakness people wanted 2 hear- ive met winston rodney- and ive seen so many live performances- i realized thru winston that they are playing to the audiance- when the audiance pays and wants carp all the better 4 the artist- less effort- less talent needed- just talk bout smokin pot and hatin this or that and boom ur bills r paid.... rite now the talent is in mixing lo-fi and chill- so even tho u may act and sound harsh i get u- oh and chek out- thievery corporation-air-nightmares on wax
